The "Ethics Committee" training has been conducted as part of the TÜBİTAK BiGG Program 2024-1 period, in collaboration with our consortium partners Boğaziçi University Technology Transfer Office, Entertech Istanbul Technopark, and Siemens Healthineers.
Prof. Dr. Yeşim Işıl Ülman, a faculty member of Acıbadem University Faculty of Medicine, provided training on "Ethics Committees, Their Types, Application and Work Procedures" on February 22, 2024, in collaboration with Acıbadem University TEKMER and TÜBİTAK-BIGG. Ulman discussed the functions of ethics committees, their application reasons, and methods with examples, which are an integral part of research ethics. In this context, she explained that the aim of bioethics is to rationally resolve conflicts between values; to do what is right; and to base our choices on principles and values. She emphasized that presenting scientific research projects for ethical committee evaluation in an independent and impartial manner with a multidisciplinary approach is vital for serving human and public health, strengthening science, improving healthcare services, and ensuring accountability and transparency.
Addressing the topic in light of international declarations and conventions, Ülman stated that all research and experiments on humans should be conducted in accordance with ethical principles based on universal human rights and human dignity. She highlighted that the ethical principles of Autonomy (informed consent, not intervening without consent), Beneficence - Non-Maleficence, Justice and Fairness, and Confidentiality and Privacy must be followed, providing examples to explain these principles.
